CBS News reports, Jan. 24, 2025, that a new effort to place a measure on the ballot that would ask California voters to approve the state’s secession from the U.S. has been cleared for signature gathering.
The measure, introduced by Marcus Evans of Fresno, must receive at least 546,651 signatures from registered voters, which is 5% of total votes cast for governor in the 2022 election, by this July 22.
According to the text of the measure, the state would be required to create a 20-member state commission, picked at random by the Secretary of State, to study California’s viability as an independent country in 2027 and to publish a report the following year.
The measure would also place the following question on the November 2028 ballot: “Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?”
If the ballot question is approved, which would require at least 50% voter participation and 55% voting “yes,” the proposal would declare a “vote of no confidence in the United States of America”, but would not change the state’s government or its relationship with the U.S. The measure would also call for the removal of the U.S. flag from all state buildings.
According to a fiscal analysis from the Legislative Analyst’s office, the measure would cost the state $10 million in election-related costs and to form the new commission, along with $2 million in annual costs to operate the commission.
Evans has been part of other initiative campaigns calling for the state to secede, including a proposal following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential election. Evans said their movement has a better chance compared to eight years ago. “We believe that now is the best time to Calexit – NOW we are better situated to make Calexit happen than in 2016,” he said.
UPDATE:
The San Diego County-based Independent California Institute has released a new poll purporting that more than 60% of Californians agree that they “would be better off California if peacefully seceded from the U.S. at some point in the next 10 years.” (Source: CalMatters, Jan. 24, 2025)

Good Riddance!!
Where is the measure for northern California to separate from southern California to form a new state?
Under Article IV of the U.S. Constitution, new states cannot form from the territory of existing states without approval from any state legislature involved—and from the U.S. Congress as well. Let’s just think about this? As it is right now, many, many of the high wage earners, and prominent business have left California, or are making plans to do so. Who is it that is going to pay for welfare benefits for those who are left? Due to sim-management, it has only been 2–3 years since these fools had to ask for an infusion of monies from the US Treasury because their debt loan was reaching critical stage. They never learn, they just keep doing what they are doing, and then when the $hit hits the fan, they are quick to sound the alarm, and with hat in hand beg the other 49 states to bail them out. It would only be fitting that they repay the US Treasury for all Federal buildings within the their borders. I do see a good side to this proposition–we would get rid of wonky eyed newly elected Senator, ho dealt so traitorously during the J6 hearings (I cannot think of his name–probably because I cannot stand him.) Also, Madam Pelosi could go away, and her good for nothing nephew Newscum could not run for President of the USA anytime in the future.I wonder if the people who are proposing this have actually done any thinking about the real consequences of California leaving the union? I do think there is a real lack of “critical thinking” among these West Coast folks! My heart goes out to those individuals who are of sound mind, and good character–yet they are trapped in a place that abuses them on every front.
Once they’re out they should never get US assistance again, they can root hog or die for doing this, and if attacked by another country outside the US let them deal with it on their own.

This was decided definitively in April,1865, after a bloody secessionist 4 years. It’s like the song “Hotel California” (appropriately) ….”you can check in (join) but you can never leave.” This is so moot…for any reason. Never gonna happen. So much wasted energy and time. How about investing all this in getting rid of the 50-yr Demorat governance here and bringing this state into the prosperity it is capable of with it’s muscular ecomomy?
