Animal Altruism: Crow helps hedgehog cross road

Rate this post

Altruism (definition): Behavior that is motivated by a desire to benefit someone other than oneself for that person’s sake.

Some of God’s creatures are more altruistic than humans.

On May 20, 2020, in Ogre, Ogres pilsēta, Latvia, traffic came to a stop when a hooded crow helped a hedgehog cross the road.

The hooded crow (Corvus cornix), aka hoodie, is a Eurasian bird species in the genus Corvus. This crow is a separate species from the common black or carrion crow.

Maybe the hedgehog was sick or having a bad day;) I love those creatures, too.

Thank you Dr.E for this precious post. It touched my heart, the kindness of the crow. Wonderful!

Silly new age people. This crow obviously wants to eat the hedgehog. I’ve seen them attack and eat chickens.

Bit hard for a crow to eat something living and as big as it is.

Cute but the crow was just poking at it to figure out if it could be eaten….

Crows and ravens are so smart. The crow knew that if the hedgehog stayed in the road, it would likely become roadkill. YouTube has some great and often humorous videos on the intelligence and antics of crows. I love them.

That was just phenomenal. I am almost taken aback that a crow would have this level of intelligence. Pretty darn wonderful.

I live in a rural area. I am very sad to tell you the crow was NOT helping the hedgehog! It may have looked like that in a short clip, it was trying to peck it to kill and eat. At very least it was eating fleas off the hedgehog but I think its intentions were not good towards the hedgehog. Ive seen too many preditators like crows, magpies not be nice to other birds or rodents around here to know this.Hope the hedgehog made it and the crow got board.

Well, the crow was still very smart. I didn’t want to eat it’s kill in the middle of the road…needed to get it to away from traffic. I’d say that was pretty smart.

In the midst of fake virtue signaling, here is real fellow feeling. So much better than a “Be Kind” sign. Thanks for this.
