Empathic dog fakes limp for owner with broken ankle

Psychopaths and pathological narcissists lack empathy, the ability to identify with or understand another’s situation or feelings.

Scientists say empathy is what makes us human.

So what does it mean when non-human creatures display empathy?

Last summer, Russell Jones, who lives in the UK, broke his ankle in an accident.

As a consequence, with his right foot and leg encased in a cast, Jones could walk only with the aid of crutches.

Then he noticed that Billy, Jones’ 8-year-old pet lurcher — a sighthound mixed with another dog type, most commonly a terrier or a herding dog — started limping too.

Alarmed, Jones took Billy to the vet.

After spending £300 (US$415.34) on scans and X-rays, it turned out there was nothing wrong with Billy. The dog was fake-limping to mimic his human!

Jones posted the video on Facebook with this message: “Cost me £300 in vet fees and X-rays, nothing wrong just sympathy. Love him ❤️

R.I.P., Rush Limbaugh (1951-2021)

This morning, a year after he announced on his radio program that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 terminal lung cancer, talk radio pioneer and titan Rush Limbaugh passed away, at age 70.

His death was announced on his program by his wife, Kathryn.

With remarkable composure, she said sadly:

“I know that I am most certainly not the Limbaugh that you tuned in to listen to today. I, like you, very much wish Rush was behind this golden microphone right now, welcoming you to another exceptional three hours of broadcasting. For over 32 years, Rush has cherished you, loyal audience, and always looked forward to every single show. It is with profound sadness I must share with you directly that our beloved Rush, my wonderful husband, passed away this morning due to complications from lung cancer.”

In the year since his diagnosis, Rush received some experimental treatment every other week. After he recuperated from the treatment, he would return to his golden EIB microphone the next week.

Rush had been absent from his radio show for more than two weeks, and I knew what his absence meant. Though Kathryn’s announcement was not surprising, I am absolutely devastated.

I began listening to Rush almost since the beginning, when his show broke out from Sacramento, CA, to syndication. Like his millions of listeners, I found him to be articulate, intelligent, funny, informative, with a remarkable ability to communicate complex ideas to the everyman. In the last few years, Rush no longer did jokes, but his political insights and judgment remained penetrating,  unparalleled among all conservative radio talkers. He also became more explicit about his Christian faith.

Rush was a great patriot who loved America and Americans, and his love was returned fully by his tens of millions of listeners.

Rush was not just the voice of American conservatism, he was the heart.

Today, the light of America is dimmed.

My only consolation is that I know he will continue to fight for us and for the good, having joined the army of the Church Triumphant in Heaven.

Ash Wednesday, beginning of Lent

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent — a season of fasting and prayer observed by Christians.

Since Jesus prepared Himself for His public ministry in 40 days, Christians imitate Him with prayer and fasting during this time of Lent to prepare for Holy Week.

Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Hebrew tradition of penance and fasting, including the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us and are a reminder of our mortality — “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

In remembrance of how Christ our Lord was tortured, suffered, and died for our sins, we are asked to make small sacrifices during Lent:

  • Abstinence: Refrain from eating meat on the Fridays of Lent for all age 14 and older. Why Friday? – because Jesus died for our sins on (Good) Friday.
  • Fasting: Eating one full meal and two small meals for age 18 through age 59. The elderly and those with special dietary needs or medical conditions that require a greater or more regular food intake, are exempted from fasting.
  • Surrender something that gives us pleasure, and/or do something good that we don’t ordinarily do.

Most of all, tell Jesus that you love Him with your whole heart, your whole soul, your whole mind, and with all your strength.

May the love and peace of Jesus Christ our Lord be with you, always,

It’s a snow day! Time to play in the snow…

It’s a snow day for us here in Oklahoma!

Though I’ll most likely be shoveling snow rather than playing in it, enjoy this video of some furry guys enjoying their time in the snow!

Beware of phone call claiming to be from Amazon.com

This seems to be the season for phone scams.

Yesterday, I posted a warning about a phone scam saying that Social Security is “taking legal action” against you for fraudulent Social Security claims.

This afternoon, I got another scam phone call, with a caller ID of (915) 200-3915. A recording said that a charge of more than $900 was made to my Amazon.com account and that I should call the (915) number if I had not made the purchase.

I immediately hung up, went online to my Amazon account and saw that no such charge had been made to my account.

The advice from Amazon is to report the scam phone call to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Go here.

If you got a scam or phishing Amazon email, or landed on a suspicious webpage, report it to Amazon:

  1. Open a new email and attach the email you suspect is fake. For suspicious webpages, copy & paste the link into the email body.If you can’t send the email as an attachment, forward it.
  2. Send the email to stop-spoofing@amazon.comNote: Sending the suspicious email as an attachment is the best way for Amazon to track it.

Remain Calm: Tips for driving in winter storms

The winter storm Uri is hitting many states which means snow and ice. There’s a lot of drivers in hard-hit states who are not very familiar with driving in winter conditions (Texas and Oklahoma, for example).

I grew up in the Seattle area where many are not prepared to drive in the snow. Also, Seattle has a lot of hills so it can be a little more complicated. Here’s what driving in a typical Seattle snow storm looks like:

It’s really not complicated to drive in the snow and one should be prepared to do so in case you have an emergency and need to drive to the hospital or get supplies. Here’s some guidance from Les Schwab on how to drive in winter conditions. This brief video also offers some basics:

The biggest mistake I’ve seen drivers make in both Seattle and Oklahoma is slamming on their brakes. That’s a big no-no! Drivers also tend to drive too fast, tailgate and pull out suddenly in front of a driver.

While many prefer to stay home during winter conditions, it’s really a good time to practice driving. There are less cars on the roads and you can familiarize yourself (a big empty parking lot is a good place to go) with how your car – and you – react to winter driving conditions.

Mostly importantly, remain calm. If you know how best to react, you will feel secure in the fact that you’ll get to your destination without a fender bender.

Safe driving!

Beware of phone call saying Social Security is taking legal action against you

At 8 a.m. this morning, I received a hoax phone call that you should be warned against.

A recording of an authoritative-sounding male voice identified himself as from Social Security. He claimed that Social Security is “taking legal action” against me for making fraudulent claims, and threatened that I would be arrested.

Knowing the call to be fraudulent, I immediately hung up the phone.

This is what Social Security’s Inspector General wants you to know about phone calls like the one I received:

The Acting Inspector General of Social Security, Gale Stallworth Stone, is urging citizens to remain vigilant of telephone impersonation schemes that exploit the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) reputation and authority.

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) continues to receive reports from across the country about fraudulent phone calls from people claiming to be from SSA.  Recent reports have indicated that unknown callers are using increasingly threatening language in these calls.  The callers state, due to improper or illegal activity with a citizen’s Social Security number (SSN) or account, a citizen will be arrested or face other legal action if they fail to call a provided phone number to address the issue.  This is a scam; citizens should not engage with these calls or provide any personal information.

SSA employees do contact citizens, generally those who have ongoing business with SSA, by telephone for customer-service purposes.  However, SSA employees will never threaten you for information; they will not state that you face potential arrest or other legal action if you fail to provide information.  In those cases, the call is fraudulent, and you should just hang up.

“Unfortunately, scammers will try anything to mislead and harm innocent people, including scaring them into thinking that something is wrong with their Social Security account and they might be arrested,” Stone said.  “I encourage everyone to remain watchful of these schemes and to alert family members and friends of their prevalence.  We will continue to track these scams and warn citizens, so that they can stay several steps ahead of these thieves.”

The OIG recently warned that some of these impersonation calls have “spoofed” SSA’s national customer service phone number, displaying 1-800-772-1213 as the incoming number on caller ID.

The Acting Inspector General urges citizens to be extremely cautious, and to avoid providing information such as your SSN or bank account numbers to unknown persons over the phone or internet unless you are certain of who is receiving it.  If you receive a suspicious call from someone alleging to be from SSA, you should report that information to the OIG at 1-800-269-0271 or online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report.

For more information, please visit https://oig.ssa.gov/newsroom/scam-awarenessFor media inquiries, please contact Andrew Cannarsa, OIG’s Communications Director, at (410) 965-2671.

I immediately filed a report of the scam call, including the caller’s phone number: https://oig.ssa.gov/report

Always remember this:

Never ever give out personal information such as your SSN or bank account/credit card numbers to unknown persons over the phone or internet unless you are certain of who is receiving it.

Elderly people especially are susceptible to scams like this fake phone call from Social Security because the elderly tend not to be savvy and up-to-date on IT and technology. Their physical fragility also makes the elderly emotionally fragile and vulnerable.

Evil people who perpetrate scams like this should be summarily executed.

Peace of Mind: Be Prepared for an Emergency

If last year’s pandemic taught us anything, it’s that you need to be prepared. Whether it be a natural disaster, pandemic or some other catastrophic event, having emergency supplies on hand provides peace of mind for you and your family.

Today the winter storm “Uri” is blowing through much of the south and heading through the midwest to the northeast. We woke up in Oklahoma to a “balmy” seven degrees with windchills well below zero. Althought we don’t have much snow (it has been accumulating since this AM and coming down harder now), with the Oklahoma winds it’s way too cold to venture outside if we don’t have to!

View from our front door this morning:

Fortunately we were able to make it to the grocery store on Friday (along with the masses) and snag the last loaf of bread and package of hamburger buns on the shelf. It was like another pandemic starting all over again!

Minus some perishables we’ll also need to purchase, we are always prepared for some kind of emergency (tornado, earthquake, etc.) and keep supplies on hand. It is much less stressful to gradually accumulate emergency supplies than trying to run out (if you even can access roads/stores) and purchase items at the last minute.

You can find lots of resources on the web for what kind of supplies to keep on hand. Here’s a suggested list from the American Red Cross. Our list includes the following:

  • Batteries, flashlights, candles, matches
  • Old school AM radio
  • Canned foods (rotate your inventory to avoid expiration) and MREs
  • Pet food
  • TP and paper towels
  • Toiletries (soap, saline solution, etc.)
  • Medical emergency supplies
  • Plastic garbage bags
  • Water
  • Cleaning supplies (in particular bleach)

We also have this product: DB Power Portable Car Jump Starter.

This jump starter also serves as a flashlight, emergency light, compass, and  cell phone/laptop charger. Every couple months I check the charge on this and it holds a charge pretty well.

While not everyone can afford to acquire and keep an extensive amount of emergency supplies on hand, anything you can start to accumulate will provide you peace of mind in case of emergency.

If you have any great ideas to add to an emergency kit, please share with us. And if you’re stuck in this storm, hope you stay safe and warm!

Valentine’s Day and the meaning of true love

Today is Valentine’s Day — the day when TV commercials nag men to buy roses, candy, and jewelry for their wives or girl friends.

But did you know that the day is named after a real person, St. Valentine?

At least three different Saint Valentines, all of them martyrs, are mentioned in the early martyrologies under the date of February 14th. But the man for whom Valentine’s Day is named most likely was a priest at Rome who, in the second half of the 3rd century, was arrested and killed by the Emperor Claudius for secretly marrying Christian couples during a time of persecution in the Church. Legend has it that while he was imprisoned and waiting for his martyrdom, he sent letters to his fellow Christians signing them, “From Your Valentine.”

The popular customs associated with Valentine’s Day probably came from a conventional belief in England and France during the Middle Ages, that on 14 February, i.e. half way through the second month of the year, the birds began to pair. Thus in Chaucer’s Parliament of Foules we read:

For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day
Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.

For this reason the day was looked upon as specially consecrated to lovers and as a proper occasion for writing love letters and sending lovers’ tokens. [Source: Catholic Encyclopedia]

So what is love?

I can find no better definition and description of true love than the words of St. Paul:

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient, love is kind.
It is not jealous, it is not pompous,
It is not inflated, it is not rude,
it does not seek its own interests,
it is not quick-tempered,
it does not brood over injury,

it does not rejoice over wrongdoing
but rejoices with the truth.
It bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things.

And here’s the true meaning of Valentine’s Day:

The Greatest Commandment of all is to love God with your whole heart, your whole mind, your whole soul, and with all your strength; and to love your neighbor as you love yourself.

May the love of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you today!
