Schools that switched to remote learning harmed children’s educational achievement in math

Here in Oklahoma schools shut down for just six weeks beginning in March 2020 when the pandemic first hit and we didn’t know what to expect. They returned to normal in-school classes in the fall of 2020. Turns out that was really best for the kids.

From Daily Mail:

Students in school districts that relied more heavily on remote learning during the pandemic fell behind in math at a far greater rate than students in states, like Texas and Florida, that stuck to in-person classes, according to a Harvard study.

Nationally, all students have seen a decrease in academic achievement because of the disruption from the pandemic, an issue that has been exacerbated by poverty and race.

But  Prof. Thomas Kane, an economist and director of Harvard’s Center for Education Policy Research, found that kids that were allowed to come to school faired far better than those who were forced to learn over video feed.

‘We estimate that in high poverty schools students lost about half a year of learning if their schools were remote for half a year or more last year,’ Kane told CNN’s Jake Tapper. ‘That’s a large effect.’

The study looked at test scores for 2.1 million American students in 49 states. Math scores suffered more than reading, according to the report.

‘Interestingly, gaps in math achievement by race and school poverty did not widen in school districts in states such as Texas and Florida and elsewhere that remained largely in-person,’ Kane told the Harvard Gazette. ‘Where schools remained in-person, gaps did not widen. Where schools shifted to remote learning, gaps widened sharply.’

God’s Miracle: Baby born at 23 weeks with incomplete esophagus survives

From Daily Mail:

“A premature baby born with an incomplete esophagus is the smallest ever to survive with the condition.

Harper Jacobo and her sister Gabriella weighed just 1lb (0.45kg) when they were born at 23 weeks in Alliance, Nebraska in February 2021.

Harper (l) and Gabriella at about 1 year old.

After birth. the twins were rushed 250 miles to a specialist Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children in Denver, Colorado, where doctors found the tube between Harper’s mouth and stomach had failed to connect.

Doctors carried out surgery before using magnets to successfully bring the two parts of the esophagus together.

Dr Steven Rothenberg, chief of pediatric surgery at the hospital, said Harper was the ‘smallest baby ever to be born with this [condition] to survive’.

The condition — known as esophageal atresia — occurs when the upper and lower part of the esophagus fail to connect.

It occurs in about one in 4,100 babies born in the U.S., although most babies survive the condition.

It is not clear what causes it, but scientists have suggested the condition could be down to abnormalities in the genes, pointing out that many sufferers also have problems with their digestive system, heart and kidneys.

Harper spent the first year of her life in hospital receiving treatment before finally being discharged.

Gabriella was not born with the birth defect, and was discharged earlier into her family’s care.

Parents Kayla Hatch and Victor Jacobo have thanked doctors for keeping their babies alive.

‘To see them breathing, kicking… it’s just truly awesome,’ Jacobo said.

Fighting back tears, he added: ‘We just can’t thank everyone enough for being there and helping us through these trying times.

‘For the rest of my life, I’m going to be thanking them.’

Trail Dust: About My Silence

When the truth hurts too much

ccognitive disonance illutration

Cognitive dissonance is a major impediment to waking people up from hypnotic indoctrination.

Dear friends, I want to state this briefly. My silence on the site is due to my own cognitive dissonance. During my active phase online I boldly opposed the Left and the Democrats. I saw the lines drawn between reliable conservative and obvious leftists. At a certain moment I became aware of more factors in our battle than I was prepared for.

For instance, I thought the Bush family was okay, and even favorable to our cause. I was not ready to see a convincing case made against Bush Senior, Bush Junior and Junior’s brother. However, at this time I have seen compelling evidence of Senior’s involvement in the murder of JFK and the attempt to murder President Reagan. I have also seen compelling arguments made of Junior’s connection to the 9-11 attacks.

Some of you are asking how it took so long for me to get this. Again, cognitive dissonance is my answer. Like so many who can’t recognize the obvious, I found that even entertaining the thought was too painful. I see this is also in the hypnotic spell people are under regarding Covid 19 and vaccinations.

Being a friend of many Jews in my life, I also couldn’t deal with the truth about the Khazarian Mafia (aka the “synagogue of Satan”, those who say they are jews but are not). Well, I still love my Jewish friends, and am thrilled with the existence of the nation of Israel, even though many bad people were involved in its restoration. The Bible clearly says that the nation of Israel will exist again, and that it is NOT because the Jews are righteous, but because God’ promises are trustworthy.

It took a long time for me to resolve my opinions and recalculate my understandings, feel ready to speak again.

What has never shaken is my confidence in the Lord and in His Word. If I couldn’t get the straight truth on TV or online, I could get the truth by opening my Bible and being instructed by the Holy Spirit.

So there it is. And this was the brief version; you wouldn’t want to sit through the long version.

Apple workers threaten to QUIT in protest over going back to the office up to three days a week by May because they ‘don’t want to deal with the commute’

Via Daily Mail:

“Apple employees are just a little over a week from their mandatory return-to-office date, but some say they plan to quit in protest because they ‘don’t want to deal with the commute’ or ‘sit around for eight hours a day.’

All US staff will have to return to the office at least one day a week starting April 11, according to a memo sent by Apple CEO Tim Cook in March. By May 23, employees will be required to be in the office at least three days a week.

But some employees say they’d rather quit than return to the office, the New York Post reported.

‘I don’t give a single f*** about ever coming back to work here,’ an employee ranted on anonymous corporate message board Blind this week. ‘It was a great resume boost but it’s not for me,’ the worker added.

Several Apple employees expressed their frustration about the new policy, and many commenters supported them, saying ‘yeah, f*** Apple.’

‘I’m going to go in to say hello and meet everyone since I haven’t since I started and then sending in my resignation when I get home,’ the same employee wrote. ‘I already know I won’t be able to deal with the commute and sitting around for 8 hours.’

Other Apple workers complained about what they believe is Apple’s unfair policy, which they pointed out is stricter than other tech companies, including Google, Amazon and Meta.

One employee wrote that they were already in the final stages of interviews with other companies due to Apple’s new policy. Another said, ‘Totally bummed and looking into full remote jobs now.’

Obesity is not “body posivity”

For decades the “body positivity” movement has focused on having society accept all shapes and sizes of women, while maintaining a healthy body.

Unfortunately, our society has become more “woke” with regards to “body positivity” and therefore more adept at blurring the lines of reality, with ill regard for the health consequences of obesity.

The latest to blur the line of reality is rapper/singer Lizzo with her new line of shapewear entitled, “Yitty.”

(WARNING: Eye bleach may be required after view the following photographs.)

Lizzo is launching a new line of shapewear in mid-April. Her statement regarding the new line: “Instead of thinking about size in this linear way, we’re thinking about it on a spectrum where everyone is included. Everyone’s size is just their size. It’s not high, it’s not low. It’s not big, it’s not small. It’s just your size.

The singer’s shapewear line will feature sizes 6X to XS.

You can read (and see more pics!) all about her new shapewear line here.

Ladies, there is nothing absolutely positive about obesity. And your “size” can be high.

In reality, doctors measure your height and weight to determine if you are overweight (or obese) and need to drop some pounds. Your clothes size can also be a very clear sign that you are getting overweight.

Doctors also will measure your BMI. See the CDC standards for BMI and how one can determine if they are overweight/obese here.

There are many side effects of being overweight/obese: High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, many types of cancer, and even severe illness if you contract COVID. See the CDC web page on the health effects of being overweight/obese here.

So please quit lying to us, Rizzo. Your size can be high and it can be big. So big in fact, that it could be deadly.

So…I quit my job over a mask directive

It’s been almost a year since we’ve had a mask mandate in our town and over a  year since many people just didn’t bother wearing them into stores, etc.

After Christmas we had a small spike in the number of Wuhan virus cases due to Omnicron. I look at the daily active case numbers and after Christmas they were under 5% of our total state population. Now over a month later the active cases are below 2% of our total population.

At my work facility, there was 7 people (out of under 15) who were diagnosed with the Wuhan virus during/after Christmas. Those infected started coming back to work in January and they were directed (as per our employer’s Covid workplace directive) to wear a mask for five days. The director of our facility issued a new directive (as they are empowered to do so) four days after many of the previously infected started returning: Wear a mask when 1) In a public area, 2) speaking with the public and 3) having close contact with a co-worker.

The day after I received verbal notification of this new “mask directive,” I saw several of the facility’s employees not wearing their masks when in a public area. I also saw the director of the facility (who issued this new mask directive) speaking at a table with a fellow employee (who had just returned from having the Wuhan virus) and neither of the were wearing a mask.

Of course, I was wearing mask my mask as per the director’s new directive.

I stated to my boss that I would appreciate it if there was some consistency in the enforcement of this new mask directive. Especially with the one issuing the directive. That director could at least follow their own rules. My boss told me to speak to the director about my concerns. I said I would on Monday as this transpired on the late Friday afternoon.

On Monday, I sure did get a surprise after my complaint on Friday afternoon!

Before I could report my concerns to the facility director, my boss tells me they spoke to the director who informed them that my boss has the authority to issue their own mask directive!

My boss proceeds to tell me that they can’t afford to be out sick for 5 to 10 days and since I cannot do their job, I need to wear a mask to protect my boss. My boss has to walk through my office to leave our area so I can’t expose the boss to the virus.

Here’s the kicker my boss told me: I should not concern myself with what others are doing/not doing regarding masks. They are adults and can make their own choices. Employees will face the consequences during their next performance review. My boss told me I need to “CYA” and wear my mask.

My boss also told me that the director and employee whom I caught sitting together maskless had to have a conversation and didn’t have time to grab their masks.

How’s that for science?

The following Monday I gave my two weeks’ notice. I’ve been wearing my mask every day since then as no one has verbally communicated to me that the directive has been rescinded. Others have not been consistently wearing their masks, including my boss.

Friday is my last day and I have my exit interview with HR tomorrow. My job is only part time and I’m quite comfortable with my decision. I’m done playing the mask game.

You really are as young as you feel

The saying “you are as young as you feel” turns out to be true.

A 2018 South Korean study found that people who feel they are younger than their chronological age have healthier brains!

The research was conducted by Seoul National University psychologists Seyul Kwak, Hairin Kim and Jeanyung Chey, and Yongsei University sociologist Yoosik Youm. Their study, “Feeling How Old I Am: Subjective Age Is Associated With Estimated Brain Age,” was published on June 7, 2018, in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience.

From the article (bold red emphasis supplied):

While the aging process is a universal phenomenon, people perceive and experience one’s aging considerably differently. Subjective age (SA), referring to how individuals experience themselves as younger or older than their actual age, has been highlighted as an important predictor of late-life health outcomes. However, it is unclear whether and how SA is associated with the neurobiological process of aging. In this study, 68 healthy older adults underwent a SA survey and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. T1-weighted brain images of open-access datasets were utilized to construct a model for age prediction. We utilized both voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and age-prediction modeling techniques to explore whether the three groups of SA (i.e., feels younger, same, or older than actual age) differed in their regional gray matter (GM) volumes, and predicted brain age. The results showed that elderly individuals who perceived themselves as younger than their real age showed not only larger GM volume in the inferior frontal gyrus and the superior temporal gyrus, but also younger predicted brain age. Our findings suggest that subjective experience of aging is closely related to the process of brain aging and underscores the neurobiological mechanisms of SA as an important marker of late-life neurocognitive health….

Our findings suggest that feeling subjectively older than one’s age may reflect relatively faster aging brain structures, whereas those who feel subjectively younger would have better-preserved and healthier structures. This study, to our knowledge, was the first attempt to examine the neuroanatomical underpinnings of SA….

[O]ur findings extend the hypothesis that older SA is associated with greater progression of brain aging process and poorer brain health. Significant tissue atrophy in the GM and older brain age may be reflective of cerebrovascular risks (Seo et al., 2012; Lockhart and DeCarli, 2014), and such changes may cause older adults to appraise their deteriorated functions as being a result of their aging (Vestergren and Nilsson, 2011).

Consistent with previous studies that have reported the clinical significance of subjective perceptions of cognitive decline (Rabin et al., 2017), subjective appraisal of one’s own decline may provide information on neurobiological changes not otherwise detectable with objective cognitive tests…. Diminished volumes of GM and older brain age may lead to reduced processing efficiency in a variety of demanding cognitive tasks, and this prolonged mismatch between reduced neural resources and burdensome environmental demands can create a subjective perception of aging. Individuals with older SA feel older because they experience frequent negative sensations as they make more cognitive efforts in daily life compared to those who report younger or same SA….

In our study, while older SA group showed a tendency to have poorer cognitive function and exhibit greater depressive symptoms, feeling younger was especially associated with younger structural characteristics of the brain.

Being overweight ages your brain

We already know from studies that excess weight, especially visceral fat — body fat that’s stored within the abdominal cavity — increases the risk of many conditions, such as:

  • heart disease, including heart attacks
  • type 2 diabetes
  • raised cholesterol, especially triglycerides
  • raised blood pressure
  • stroke
  • Breast and colorectal cancer
  • Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of senile dementia

Now, there is evidence that excess fat may have mental effects as well — that having too much fatty tissue in the body impairs our brains.

Lizzo is a rapper who is proud of being fat, and is lauded for her “body positivity”. In a recent video, she celebrates having put on more weight, calling her fat acceptance “unconditional self-love”. (New York Post)

A recent Canadian study of 9,200 adults aged 30 to 75 years found what appears to be fat’s direct harm on one’s ability to think quickly, even after taking into account heart health, brain status (injury) and education. The researchers found that as body fat rose, people processed information more slowly, as if their brains had actually aged — by as much as one year for every 9% increase in overall body fat. Excess body fat also appeared to boost the risk for brain injury, including lesions or the kind of markers that indicate a history of unrecognized (“silent”) strokes. (NewsMax)

Scientists believe that the association between excess weight and cognitive impairment may be due to (Medical News Today):

  • Inflammation: One recent study involving more than 15,000 individuals found high levels of plasma C-reactive protein, an inflammatory marker, in those with a high BMI (body mass index) and a high waist-hip ratio. Dr. Eamon Laird, a senior research fellow at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, says inflammation may lead to brain tissue damage.
  • Hypertension: Dr. Laird says that “Obesity could be associated with reduced blood flow to the brain, which may increase the risk of vascular microcellular damage, which could lead to [a] reduction in cognitive test score.” Laird and other scientists found that a 1-centimeter increase in waist size gave the same reduction in blood flow as one year of aging.

The way to lose body fat is not a mystery: Eat less and exercise.

And the exercise can be as simple as walking.

If everyone between 40 and 85 years of age were active just 10 minutes more a day, it could save more than 110,000 U.S. lives a year, a large study reports. The study’s lead scientist, Pedro Saint-Maurice of the Metabolic Epidemiology Branch at the U.S. National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, said: “Our projections are based on an additional 10 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity. If the walk is brisk, it counts.”

Do you have joint pains?

Did you know that regular exercise is also good for joint health?

Leading a sedentary lifestyle — spending too much time sitting or lying down — can be harmful to your joint health and even exacerbate preexisting joint problems. Getting regular exercise is an excellent way to prevent future joint issues and treat preexisting arthritis. (St. John’s Health)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity each week.

That means just 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. We can do that, can’t we?

See also “10 reasons why exercise is good for us“.

Update (Feb. 8, 2022):

Here’s another reason for regular exercise: Exercise can help prevent Alzheimer’s, the most common form of senile dementia (WebMD):

  • A Swedish study suggests that stamina is tied to the risk for dementia. Women who were in better cardiovascular health had an 88% lower risk of getting dementia than other women, according to the report published in the medical journal Neurology.
  • The Alzheimer’s Association says regular cardiovascular exercise can help reduce the risk of getting the disease, echoing a similar message from scientists at the University of Southern California. They found that up to a third of Alzheimer’s cases are preventable through lifestyle changes, including physical exercise.
