Thursday Animal: A kitten bigger than a 2-year-old human

Kefir

From the New York Post, Jan. 18, 2022:

A Maine Coone from Stary Oskol in eastern Russia is thought to be the world’s largest kitten at just under 2 years old — with perhaps years more before he stops growing.

Owner Yulia Minina bought the alabaster tomcat named Kefir — after the creamy cultured milk drink — two years and many pounds ago.

“But when strangers come to the house, everyone first confuses him with a dog,” she added.

In fact, Kefir weighs more than the average toddler, with 2-year-olds typically clocking in at 26 to 28 pounds….

She told South West News Service that the commanding kitty’s stature is matched by his charming disposition. “He not only grew up big in appearance, he is also very smart and always behaves calmly…. Kefir has a formidable appearance, but he is a very affectionate and modest child,” she mused.

That really is a whole lot of kitty! It’s good that his “Mama” is a younger person–I doubt that an elderly person could handle dealing with a pet of that size. He really is beautiful! (Makes me want to go out and get another baby.)

Last night I was on the PC and as usual my cat Stripey was on my lap, biting me, chewing my knee, pressing his paw on the keyboard (he knows exactly what that does). He hates the competition. Then I played this video. Stripey went dead still. He was locked on the video. Did not move a hair. at the end when the camera zoomed in on the big cat’s face, Stripey went totally rigid. Video ended and Stripey didnt move. I played it again, and again he watched. At the end, with the zoom, he leaned tight into the screen staring. So, I played it about 10 times. I knew Stripey reacted to cat and bird sounds, but I never felt he ‘saw’ what was on screen. I am sure this time he saw a cat, bigger that a human. Maybe he always saw the other cats in videos, but without sound or smell he wrote them off as punks. Dont know.

Ha ha…loved this description. My cats often watch “Big Cat Week ” on Nat Geo or some such….we laugh silently and revel in watching them watching the TV. I even have one cat who LOVES to watch the “ticker-tape” news-script on the bottom of the TV screen on the morning news

OK. This is a beautiful, impressive cat! Totally love the post & the pics.!!!

We have a HUGE & beautiful semi-long-haired cat born of a feral mother we took in to deliver in our den,.who was born almost looking like 12 wks old already… HUGE & beautifully marked, fluffy, & w/eyes opened early. He seems a Norwegian Forest Cat & at a year old, is 25 lb & physically well-balanced to this weight…we do not know what to think of him. He is the size of one of our past Shi-Tsu dogs (who should have weighed LESS)….and he is not FAT…he is just a BIG young cat .Here in CA, people import Icelandic Ponies, St. Bernards, Huskies, all sorts of breeds that are not native to this Southern CA climate, and they don’t CARE. And if they have a male…they also DO NOT neuter….and they do not restrict an un-neutered male from roaming. This is my guess as to why I have a 25-lb young male cat who resembles a Norwegian Forest Cat.
