Elephants run to greet man who’d been away for 14 months

Darrick Thomson, a staffer at Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand, had been away for a year and two months.

But his absence had only made the elephants’ hearts grow fonder.

When Thomson returned, he called out to a herd of elephants.

Watch the overjoyed elephants run in the water to greet him.

If that isn’t love, I don’t know what is.

Elephant Nature Park was founded by a woman named Lek Chailert, on the premise that elephant tourism can be accomplished in a safe and healthy environment for the animals. Chailert has devoted her life to rescuing elephants and educating the world on the horrors that they face in the tourism and logging industries.

Darrick Thomson, a Canadian, is Chailert’s husband. (Chiang Rai Times)

Sunday Devotional: Resurrection is the key to our faith

1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20

Brothers and sisters:
If Christ is preached as raised from the dead,
how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead?
If the dead are not raised, neither has Christ been raised,
and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain;
you are still in your sins.
Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
If for this life only we have hoped in Christ,
we are the most pitiable people of all.

But now Christ has been raised from the dead,
the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

Today’s reading from St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians is a harbinger of Easter Sunday, which will be on April 17, a little more than two months away.

In his letter, St. Paul was blunt and forthright in identifying the Resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth from the dead as central to the Christian faith. He said, if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain“, i.e., worthless or futile.

Edicule encasing the Tomb of Christ in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Happily, we do have empirical evidence of the Resurrection, one of which is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem — the site where Jesus was crucified (“Calvary” or “Golgotha”), and the site of the tomb where Jesus’ body was placed. The tomb is enclosed by an 18th-century shrine called the Edicule.

In 1809, during a partial opening of the Edicule by the architect Nikolaos Komnenos, a “sweet aroma” emanated from the tomb, the same “scent of sanctity” that often accompanies Marian apparitions and the tombs of some saints.

More recently, on October 26-28, 2016, scientists undertaking restoration work in the Edicule also smelled a “sweet aroma” when they removed the marble slab that covers the tomb. There were also electromagnetic disturbances: some of the measuring instruments used by the scientists, when placed vertically on the stone on which Christ’s body rested, either malfunctioned or ceased to work entirely. (Source: Aleteia)

According to scientists at Italy’s National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) who, in 2011, concluded their five-year study of the Shroud of Turin — the linen cloth in which Jesus’ body was wrapped — the image on the Shroud had been left by “a short and intense burst of VUV directional radiation,” stronger than could be created by any technology currently available to man. VUV is vacuum ultra-violet, a type of electromagnetic radiation.

Shroud of Turin

Imagine how powerful the radiation burst of the Resurrection must have been to leave electromagnetic traces after more than 2,000 years, which were detected by those scientists restoring the Edicule in 2016.

And if the Resurrection is true, then we and our loved ones will also be resurrected after our mortal bodies died, just as Jesus had raised from the dead Lazarus, the daughter of Jairus, and the son of the widow at Nain.

Colossians 3:1-4

Brothers and sisters:
If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above,
where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ your life appears,
then you too will appear with him in glory.

Keep the faith!

May the peace and love of Jesus Christ Our Lord be with you,

Animals are smart!

Our companion animals are really smart.

Watch these dogs and cats open doors — to the bathroom, of a car, and especially refrigerator doors. One cat even “turns on” a faucet for drinking water. 😀

Friday funny: Prince Harry and Meghan’s Montecito mansion is engulfed by foul smell

This gave me a good chuckle!

From the Daily Mail:

Harry and Meghan’s £11million California mansion is apparently engulfed by a foul smell leaving neighbours ‘disgusted’, it has emerged.

The duke and duchess’ headache is said to have been caused by the nearby Andrée Clark Bird Refuge, a 42-acre saltwater marsh. The area is one of the largest wildlife refuges in Santa Barbara and the water can become ‘stagnant’ leading to an odour.

The foul stink is said to have hit the area in Montecito, which is also home to Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry.

A local resident told the Mirror: ‘It smells like offal that has been rotting in the sun. It makes my stomach churn. I’ve seen lots of homeowners closing their windows when it wafts over.’

Local officials say the stench could last as long as the autumn, when improvements are in the pipeline. Cameron Benson, clean water manager for the City of Santa Barbara, said: ‘Water can become stagnant there. The odour issues are sporadic and sometimes they are worse in some conditions.’

Harry and Meghan have had to contend with odour issues in the past. Last year, it was reported the royals were living near a legal cannabis factory base in Santa Barbara.

The couple’s mansion is just up the road from the 20 large greenhouses full of the plants — leaving the luxury suburb reeking. Neighbours made a string of complaints, sparking the company to install new ‘odour control systems’.

Gregory Gandrud told the Sunday Mirror: ‘The stink was getting stronger and heading their way. I was driving along the freeway and was hit hard by the smell. It doesn’t make you high but it’s not what you want driving at 70mph.

‘I had to pull over. It made me completely lose my train of thought. Lots of people here are suffering.’

How about that, AOC fits right in with this circus freak show.

GregB is in 2nd place, with two #1 votes and 8 points:

“Give them bread and circuses and they will never revolt.” -Juvenal

With grocery and other store shelves now having many bare spots, this is how the latest bread (Gov’t stimulus checks) and circuses like this freak show keep people from revolting against the many evils being forced upon us amid a tsunami of endless lies (bio-weapon spike protein clot shots posing as “vaccines.”)

Arche N. (with two #2 votes) and Calgirl (with one #1 vote) are in 3rd place with 4 points each:

Arche N.: “Kiss me, kiss up to me–what’s the difference? I’m AOC (not A-OK)!”

Calgirl: “In a nutshell, proof that God takes care of the mentally challenged, the inept; unable; the socially bereft. The rest of us fend for ourselves with what God gave us.”

Jackie Puppet is in 4th place, with one #2 vote and 2 points:

How much longer before she hugs Michael Obama? AOC obviously is into black shemales!

WELL DONE, EVERYONE!

So…I quit my job over a mask directive

It’s been almost a year since we’ve had a mask mandate in our town and over a  year since many people just didn’t bother wearing them into stores, etc.

After Christmas we had a small spike in the number of Wuhan virus cases due to Omnicron. I look at the daily active case numbers and after Christmas they were under 5% of our total state population. Now over a month later the active cases are below 2% of our total population.

At my work facility, there was 7 people (out of under 15) who were diagnosed with the Wuhan virus during/after Christmas. Those infected started coming back to work in January and they were directed (as per our employer’s Covid workplace directive) to wear a mask for five days. The director of our facility issued a new directive (as they are empowered to do so) four days after many of the previously infected started returning: Wear a mask when 1) In a public area, 2) speaking with the public and 3) having close contact with a co-worker.

The day after I received verbal notification of this new “mask directive,” I saw several of the facility’s employees not wearing their masks when in a public area. I also saw the director of the facility (who issued this new mask directive) speaking at a table with a fellow employee (who had just returned from having the Wuhan virus) and neither of the were wearing a mask.

Of course, I was wearing mask my mask as per the director’s new directive.

I stated to my boss that I would appreciate it if there was some consistency in the enforcement of this new mask directive. Especially with the one issuing the directive. That director could at least follow their own rules. My boss told me to speak to the director about my concerns. I said I would on Monday as this transpired on the late Friday afternoon.

On Monday, I sure did get a surprise after my complaint on Friday afternoon!

Before I could report my concerns to the facility director, my boss tells me they spoke to the director who informed them that my boss has the authority to issue their own mask directive!

My boss proceeds to tell me that they can’t afford to be out sick for 5 to 10 days and since I cannot do their job, I need to wear a mask to protect my boss. My boss has to walk through my office to leave our area so I can’t expose the boss to the virus.

Here’s the kicker my boss told me: I should not concern myself with what others are doing/not doing regarding masks. They are adults and can make their own choices. Employees will face the consequences during their next performance review. My boss told me I need to “CYA” and wear my mask.

My boss also told me that the director and employee whom I caught sitting together maskless had to have a conversation and didn’t have time to grab their masks.

How’s that for science?

The following Monday I gave my two weeks’ notice. I’ve been wearing my mask every day since then as no one has verbally communicated to me that the directive has been rescinded. Others have not been consistently wearing their masks, including my boss.

Friday is my last day and I have my exit interview with HR tomorrow. My job is only part time and I’m quite comfortable with my decision. I’m done playing the mask game.

Watch a Blue Tit make a nest and hatch an egg!

The Eurasian blue tit is a small blue-and-yellow bird, 4.7 in long with a wingspan of 7.1 in, and weighs only 0.39 oz.

Usually resident and non-migratory, blue tits are widespread throughout temperate and subarctic Europe. They usually nest in tree holes, although they easily adapt to nest boxes.

The Eurasian blue tit is a valuable destroyer of pests. No species destroys more coccids and aphids, the worst foes of many plants.

Here’s a live cam video of a Blue Tit making a luxurious nest inside a box:

You really are as young as you feel

The saying “you are as young as you feel” turns out to be true.

A 2018 South Korean study found that people who feel they are younger than their chronological age have healthier brains!

The research was conducted by Seoul National University psychologists Seyul Kwak, Hairin Kim and Jeanyung Chey, and Yongsei University sociologist Yoosik Youm. Their study, “Feeling How Old I Am: Subjective Age Is Associated With Estimated Brain Age,” was published on June 7, 2018, in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience.

From the article (bold red emphasis supplied):

While the aging process is a universal phenomenon, people perceive and experience one’s aging considerably differently. Subjective age (SA), referring to how individuals experience themselves as younger or older than their actual age, has been highlighted as an important predictor of late-life health outcomes. However, it is unclear whether and how SA is associated with the neurobiological process of aging. In this study, 68 healthy older adults underwent a SA survey and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. T1-weighted brain images of open-access datasets were utilized to construct a model for age prediction. We utilized both voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and age-prediction modeling techniques to explore whether the three groups of SA (i.e., feels younger, same, or older than actual age) differed in their regional gray matter (GM) volumes, and predicted brain age. The results showed that elderly individuals who perceived themselves as younger than their real age showed not only larger GM volume in the inferior frontal gyrus and the superior temporal gyrus, but also younger predicted brain age. Our findings suggest that subjective experience of aging is closely related to the process of brain aging and underscores the neurobiological mechanisms of SA as an important marker of late-life neurocognitive health….

Our findings suggest that feeling subjectively older than one’s age may reflect relatively faster aging brain structures, whereas those who feel subjectively younger would have better-preserved and healthier structures. This study, to our knowledge, was the first attempt to examine the neuroanatomical underpinnings of SA….

[O]ur findings extend the hypothesis that older SA is associated with greater progression of brain aging process and poorer brain health. Significant tissue atrophy in the GM and older brain age may be reflective of cerebrovascular risks (Seo et al., 2012; Lockhart and DeCarli, 2014), and such changes may cause older adults to appraise their deteriorated functions as being a result of their aging (Vestergren and Nilsson, 2011).

Consistent with previous studies that have reported the clinical significance of subjective perceptions of cognitive decline (Rabin et al., 2017), subjective appraisal of one’s own decline may provide information on neurobiological changes not otherwise detectable with objective cognitive tests…. Diminished volumes of GM and older brain age may lead to reduced processing efficiency in a variety of demanding cognitive tasks, and this prolonged mismatch between reduced neural resources and burdensome environmental demands can create a subjective perception of aging. Individuals with older SA feel older because they experience frequent negative sensations as they make more cognitive efforts in daily life compared to those who report younger or same SA….

In our study, while older SA group showed a tendency to have poorer cognitive function and exhibit greater depressive symptoms, feeling younger was especially associated with younger structural characteristics of the brain.
